I imagine my bootlegger ancestors are going to haunt me when they see the first alcohol I’m reviewing is a bourbon from the land of Lincoln (though if my support of the first African-American POTUS didn’t cause them to rise from the dead, nothing will).

Evanston, Illinois, is the site of FEW Spirits, so named for Francis Elizabeth Willard, one of the mothers of prohibition. Are you considered successful if something you despise is eventually named after you? In fairness to Francis, she did champion a lot of winning issues as well.

The founder of FEW, Paul Hletko, worked tirelessly to overturn Evanston’s decades-long alcohol ban and, in celebration, opened up a distillery named after his nemesis.

I first discovered FEW through a subscription to Flaviar, something I’ll cover in a later review. As a whiskey novice, I was nervous about the welcome box of liquor they sent me but came away so pleasantly surprised that I ordered a full bottle of FEW’s bourbon whiskey and shared it with several friends far more experienced in bourbon matters than I, all of whom enjoyed it.

As I’m still learning the ins and outs of whiskey drinking and appreciation, I’ll spare you an in-depth review of the tasting notes. I will say that FEW’s bourbon whiskey served as a great intro for my novice palate while still pleasing my comrades in drinking. It’s flavorful without being overwhelming and teases you with notes of caramel and cinnamon before a refreshingly spicy finish leaves you wanting more.
